THE SHOW

After spending the summer of 1997 writing and recording a full-length comedy album, "Don't Laugh, That's My Mom," The 3rd Floor received an offer to perform in their first college gig. Ted had an old high school buddy named Gus who was part of an up and coming Portland-area rock band called, "The American Girls". They had talked about doing some sort of project together. When the band got an offer to play for a group of incoming freshman during orientation week at The University Of Oregon, they gave us a call. They were looking for an opening act and figured our brand of edgy dark comedy would fit right in with a bunch of kids away from home for the first time. They were right. The show received a standing ovation from a group of 500+ students. This would be the last time the original cast would perform together mostly intact (One cast member was "unavailable" at the time.)

- TALES FROM THE SHOW -
1. Bryan Coffee and Ted Douglass made a special trip down to Eugene to put up posters they had made the night before, advertising the free show at the University. They had two different posters. One featured the freakish composite photo from the cover of our album, which always worked well on posters, because people would stop to see what the hell that face was advertising. The second poster caused some controversy. The poster was a collection of words that formed the traditional T3F arrow logo. It said, "A Jew. A Fag. A Mormon. A Womanizer. A Single Mother. A Bi-Sexual Mexican. A Truck Driver. And Whitey. - The 3rd Floor - Something To Offend Everyone" We thought it was a very funny poster. The students liked it too. However, someone on the academic staff sure didn't. We received a phone call ordering us to take them all down 2 days after we put them up. We put a call in to Brandon Campbell's family, residents of Eugene, asking if they could take an hour to take down all the posters. They did so gladly. However, they found that most of the posters had already been taken…by students, to put in their dorms. We win.

2. The show took place in the EMU ballroom at UofO. This room is gigantic (think 3 high school gyms). When we arrived to perform, we were informed that the first row of seats would be about 50 feet back from the edge of the stage. This was to accommodate students who wished to dance during The American Girls' performance, following ours. It made perfect sense for their show, but very little sense for a theatrical sketch show. The audience would barely be able to see our faces. Also, up until the show began, there were only about 50 people there to see the show, and about 10 of them were friends from Portland. We were all nerves in the green room, worried that the show would fail miserably with a tiny audience in this huge auditorium, sitting 50 feet away. Then one of the staff members showed up with our check. This was a slap of reality in our face. We realized that for the first time, we weren't performing for a paying audience. We had our money. It didn't really matter how we did. The removal of performance pressure energized us. We went out swinging. The show started with the finale dance number from our first show, a high-energy hip-hop number with us all inexplicably wearing yellow bike helmets and knee pads. Starting a show this way was a great idea. The blaring music and screaming comedians perked up the ears of the 100's of incoming freshmen mingling outside. By the end of our third sketch of the evening, the audience had grown from 50 to over 500 students. The moment our final dance number ended, the audience was on their feet. We felt like The Beatles. It was an amazing feeling.
