We were young. We were cocky. We got the chance to extend our first outing due to selling out performances on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays on our debut run. Our early success allowed us to attract attention from some other theater spaces in town with some better time slots. Stark Raving Theatre was the resident company at what is now The Back Door Theatre. It's an intimate space behind The Common Grounds coffee shop in the Hawthorne District. They were kind enough to give us a 6-week late night run in their space. If people thought we were cocky when we started the run (just look at the title of the opening sketch in the show), it was nothing compared to afterwards. We sold out all 6 weeks, often sending away many. We developed a synergy with our audience that performers often only dream of. We also tried a gimmick to get people to see the show multiple times. During the first 3 weeks, the show ran about an hour. But during the second 3 weeks, we added 20 minutes of new sketches, punched up some sound and visual effects within the existing sketches, and called it a Special Edition Extended Director's Cut. This was a dig at George Lucas, whose extended re-tooled versions of the original Star Wars trilogy were running in the theaters during our run. Little did we know it was just the beginning of the shame he'd bring to the classic Star Wars saga. Damn you Lucas.
